UNGIS Focus for 2011-2012
  • Undertake follow-up to the CEB decision with regards to the Overall Review of the Implementation of the WSIS Outcomes (WSIS+10)

  • Organize a joint UNGIS input to the Rio + 20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (4-6 June 2012)

  • Organize a joint UNGIS session at UNCTAD XIII Conference in Doha, Qatar

  • Identify UN processes and events relevant to the UNGIS mandate and ensure preparation of the UNGIS position paper(s) in timely manner to ensure advocacy on use of ICTs

  • Establish regular interactions with other UN interagency groups (UNDG, inter agency Task Force on MDGs) and establish a reporting mechanism to HLCP.

  • Mapping ICT-related projects of UNGIS members through the WSIS Stocktaking database link

  • Enhance collaboration and information sharing through the online platform of WSIS communities link

  • Continue joint initiatives on :

    • Open Access to Scientific Information (OASI)

    • Science Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP) reviews

    • Mobile for Development (MfD).

  • Cooperate with the Partnership for the Measuring of ICT for Development

  • Raise awareness about UNGIS

  


Open Consultation Process on Overall Review of the Implementation of the
WSIS Outcomes (WSIS+10)

Open Consultation Process on Overall Review of the Implementation of the WSIS Outcomes (WSIS+10) The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) outcome documents and the UN General Assembly Resolution 60/252 resolved to conduct an overall review of the implementation of the Summit outcomes in 2015. The ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 172 (PP-10) on the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the WSIS, including the possibility of holding a high-level event in 2014/2015 has requested ITU Secretary General to initiate the preparatory process at the UN Chief Executives Board (CEB). Consequently CEB tasked UNGIS to prepare, on the basis of an open consultation, an Action Plan to organize high-level meeting on the WSIS Review. The Action Plan would be presented to the CEB meeting in April 2012, and would take into consideration the strong support of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development served by UNCTAD.

Moibile for DevelopmentUNGIS Contribution to the RIO+20 Preparatory Process

Following on the recommendations of its 7th meeting that took place in Geneva last May, UNGIS agreed to present a joint contribution to the preparatory process of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO+20). In response to the call for contributions by the RIO+20 secretariat, UNGIS has prepared a contribution highlighting the relevant aspects of ICTs and Information Society to help achieve a green economy and sustainable development.

Moibile for DevelopmentUNGIS Joint Initiative on Mobile for Development

This initiative was introduced during the seventh UNGIS Working Level meeting in May 2011. The objective of this initiative is to identify key policy initiatives and add value to the existing programmes and projects by facilitating synergies and joint efforts in order to maximize coordinated action, coherence and effectiveness towards implementing successful Mobile for Development Projects.
