UNESCWA: United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
The secretariat of the
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
:
Promotes economic and social development through regional and subregional cooperation and integration;
Serves as the main economic and social development forum within the United Nations system for the ESCWA region;
Supports the development by its member States of norms and standards that facilitate economic relations and integration within the region and into the world economy;
Undertakes research and analysis and promotes policy measures for the economic and social development of member States;
Gathers and disseminates information and data relating to the economic and social development of the region;
Organizes conferences and intergovernmental and expert group meetings and sponsors training workshops, symposia and seminars;
Formulates and promotes development assistance activities and projects commensurate with the needs and priorities of the region, acts as an executing agency for relevant operational projects and provides technical advisory services and project-specific consultations to Governments, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations;
Coordinates ESCWA activities with those of the major departments/ offices of the United Nations at Headquarters, as well as specialized agencies and intergovernmental organizations, such as the League of Arab States, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, with a view to ensuring maximum complementarity and synergy;
Provides substantive and secretariat services and documentation for ESCWA and its subsidiary bodies.
